About 3 km east of Gorinchem, near Fort Vuren, lies the Hondswaard (35 ha). The approximately 1 km long floodplain area stretches from the dike at Fort Vuren to the east-facing former brick factory Heuff. The area in the floodplains of the Waal is owned by Staatsbosbeheer and is not equipped for beach recreation. Animals graze in the area. Do not pet and feed these animals and keep your distance.
Parallel to the river, about 60 meters away, a so-called clog path runs through the meadows, which is part of the Vurensche Polderpad hiking route. Between the cribs of the river are three beautiful beaches.
Nudist recreation takes place on one of these beaches, check the route page for location and parking options. In 2014 some fuss arose , because Staatsbosbeheer threatened to penalize nude visitors. In a conversation with the NFN, it became apparent that Staatsbosbeheer is not against nude recreation, but that this should be limited to the sandy beach on the river. Due to the hiking trail, the meadow is not suitable for nude recreation. Furthermore, sexual nuisance is checked.
The beach is located behind a pond that was created by the clay extraction of the brick factory, with surrounding bushes and is therefore limited and visible from a large distance from the public road. Along the water is a small sandy beach, furthermore the nudist beach consists of a strip of uncultivated grassland. There are no facilities on the nudist beach. Take all the waste home yourself. Bicycles may not be taken into the area, so place them by the fence at the entrance.
Swimming in the rivers is dangerous. There is often a treacherous current between cribs. In addition, the suction of passing ships makes swimming dangerous. So be warned and limit swimming to bathing! The swimming water has a slowly sloping bottom. There is no defined swimming area.
