The island of Ameland has four small village centers, from west to east: Hollum, Ballum, Nes and Buren. The ferry port is fairly central on the island, about 1.5 km from the village of Nes. The main tourist attractions on the island are the 27 km long beach and the beautiful nature. There are also many pleasant terraces and nice shops in the villages. Tourist cars are allowed on the island, but on Ameland tourists' bicycles are the most important means of transport. Ameland has around 90 km of cycle paths. Just behind the dunes of the North Sea beach runs a long cycle path from west to east, with many turns to the various beach entrances.
Ameland can be reached with the ferry service Holwerd - Ameland.
The crossing takes approximately 45 minutes. A is a 5-minute walk from the boat bicycle rental .
The APV has been adjusted since 2013 and nude recreation is officially permitted between posts 18 and 20. On the beach section indicated here, nude recreation by the municipality is prohibited . Because the municipality does not have the authority to prohibit nude recreation, quiet beach areas also remain suitable for nude recreation.
The beach area between posts 4 and 7 is suitable for nude recreation. At pole 7, this section borders the guarded beach section of Badstrand Ballum. This part is used much less for nude recreation than the part at pole 18 (Ameland East). There is a sandbar in front of the beach. The area between the sandbar and the beach is not completely dry at low tide. It is forbidden to swim in front of the sandbar. Due to the many algae and plant growth, the pool for the beach is also not very attractive for swimming. Up to post 5.5 (at the height of the Finnegat path) the beach is very overgrown. This is a bird breeding area that is not accessible. Then a beautiful wide beach; very suitable for (nude) beach recreation. There are no facilities on the nudist beach. At the beach entrance (pole 7) is the beach pavilion Ballum.
It is forbidden to swim in the sea at low tide. The bathing times are listed on the Ameland municipality site. The swimming season is currently closed, from 1 May the bathing water quality will be checked again.
